FRENCH INFLUENCE

CLASSIC CONTEMPORARY

To transcend centuries old magnificent French architecture, French administration in the 20th century had to find a way to contemporize Paris without destroying historical structural design. Anybody anywhere can make something totally new with new material, but heritage would be lost with only contemporary styling. So doing classic-contemporary renovation of existing architecture has become a huge program in France. A modern country like the US can never do classic-contemporary renovation as they do not have a huge sense of historical tradition. They can excel in contemporary architecture but not in classic contemporary work. The Louvre, originally built as a fortress in 1190, was reconstructed as a royal palace in the 16th century and into a museum in 1793. The Pyramid of Louvre since 1987 is a visual example of how 12th century Louvre was contemporized with a futuristic museum platform without destroying the old architecture. Simultaneously, lots of functional elements were added to enlarge accessibility to the museum. So Pyramid of Louvre with old Louvre in the background gives unending imagination of classic contemporary architecture. Within 2 km we can see the totally contemporary architecture of the Cultural Centre of Georges Pompidou. Sen is always amazed at the expert handling of the old, classic contemporary and contemporary architectural dimensions of France which express how to take human society forward.
